Google backlink checker steps before you hand over a rented site
There is no official Google backlink checker with a clean score. There is a Links report in Search Console, and it is good enough for a handover audit.
The handover audit, in order
- Open Search Console, then Links, then Top linking sites
- Export the list of linking sites and note the count
- Open each unfamiliar domain and judge it by eye
- Compare with your own order log: every paid link should be there, in time
- Look for links you did not order and ask where they came from
- Check anchor text under Top linking text
- Repeat in Ahrefs or Semrush for a second opinion
- Save screenshots with the date
Why bother with an audit
A rented site is a small business asset. The renter may ask a freelancer to review it, and that person will open Ahrefs in seconds.
No surprises, then.
Doing the audit yourself means you meet any odd link first, and you can explain it. It also gives you a clean baseline for the next Google update, such as the August 2025 spam update, so you can tell whether later changes came from you or from outside.
What the Links report can and cannot show
Search Console lists the linking sites that Google knows about for your property. It gives no quality score. It will not list every link, and it can trail a new placement by days or weeks.
That lag matters.
Third-party tools such as Ahrefs, Semrush and Majestic run their own crawlers, so their totals differ from Google's and from each other. Treat any single total as a rough range, and use trends rather than one-day snapshots.
Which tool answers which question
| Question | Best place to look |
|---|---|
| Does Google know this link? | Search Console, Links report |
| How strong is the donor? | Ahrefs or Semrush, DR or Authority Score |
| Did my paid order go live? | Ordered links page, then the donor URL |
| Is the anchor mix natural? | Search Console top linking text |
| Are there toxic-looking extras? | Ahrefs, Semrush, or Majestic exports |
If the report shows a link you did not order
Open the donor page
See whether the link is editorial, a directory entry or something scraped. Most unknown links are harmless.
Check the date
Compare the first-seen date with your order log. If it predates your work, someone else made it.
Decide whether to act
Ignore it unless it is clearly abusive and you have a manual action. Google says it discounts most spam links automatically.
A note on timing
Run the audit about a week before you open talks with a renter. That gives Search Console time to catch up with links placed in the last fortnight.
Too early, and you miss new ones.
If your site went through a Google core update window, such as March 2024 or August 2024, wait for the rollout to finish before you read any traffic dip as a link problem. Rollouts have taken two weeks or more.
Google has said most unwanted links are ignored automatically since the December 2022 link spam update. A disavow file is for a manual action, not for routine cleaning.
Putting the audit to work
Run it before the pitch, so your claims match what is on the page. Run it again after a Google update if calls fall, because the cause may be elsewhere.
Keep copies.
If you need a refresher on order pacing, the week-by-week page shows when each check belongs, and the renter Q&A shows how to explain results.
